I was most pleasantly surprised by "The Battle of Penang: World War One in the Far East". It has been my experience that periphery published books by amateur historians can often be disappointing in terms of scholarship and research. This was book by J.R. Robertson has proven the rule by exception. What a fantastic book! For readers already familiar with the exploits of the German light cruiser Emden during WW1 will benefit the most from Robertson's questioning of the conventional narrative of Emden's successful attack on Penang. Robertson's evaluation of all evaluation of source material as well as his willingness to delve into non-english (French in this case) sources speaks well to his thoroughness. The authors occasional questioning of the conventional narrative is absent any overt political agenda- as is often the case in "revisionist" history authors. His very detailed descriptions of the battle and thorough examination of various sources is quite remarkable.I would highly recommend this fine book to anyone interested in WW1 naval warfare without hesitation.

Interesting little known history
The author has a couple of minor historical mistakes mistakes in the initial chapters but all in all an engaging read from another perspective.
fascinating story and excellent unique archival sources; however, prose is pretty poor, quite awful, too bad somebody else with some style did not use the same source material
